Homes and Drive Routes Near the FBI Redstone Campus

The FBI's footprint on Redstone Arsenal keeps growing, and many of the people coming with it are moving from the Washington, D.C. area. If that's you, here's what's been reported about the campuses, how the gates work and how to approach a home search from a distance.

How big the FBI presence is getting

The FBI says it has been at Redstone Arsenal for more than 50 years, going back to the Hazardous Devices School in 1971, and that the Arsenal has provided the Bureau with almost 1,600 acres of land.

In December 2025, the Redstone Rocket reported that an FBI official expected the Bureau's Redstone headcount to nearly double, from more than 2,200 people to 4,000 by 2030. That includes more than 500 personnel moving from the National Capital Region. The official said those employees would primarily relocate to the north campus in 2026 and 2027, then to the south campus by 2030 once those facilities are finished.

Where the two campuses are

According to the same report, FBI Redstone has two main footprints about seven miles apart.

The north campus is in the middle of the installation, across from NASA and the Missile and Space Intelligence Center. The report said three more buildings there, including Tech 2 and Tech 3, are expected to be completed in 2027.

The south campus is largely under construction off Redstone Road. The report said two active construction sites there are expected to be finished by 2030.

The official name of the FBI campus at Redstone is the Richard Shelby Center for Innovation and Advanced Technology.

Gates to know

Both campuses are inside the fence, so your commute is a drive to a gate, then across the Arsenal. Here's what the Arsenal's access control page listed on October 14, 2026:

  • Gate 9, Rideout Road: open 24/7. The Visitor Control Center is outside this gate.
  • Gates 1 and 7, Martin Road: open weekday mornings, then outbound only from 1:30 to 9 p.m.
  • Gate 10, Patton Road: 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays.
  • Gate 3, Redstone Road: 5:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on weekdays, then outbound only until 9 p.m. Since the south campus is also off Redstone Road, it's worth asking about.

Gate hours change. Ask your sponsor or security office which gate people in your building use, and see our gate hours guide for the full table.

Which areas to look at

We don't publish drive times, because they depend on your exact address, the hour and current road work. Instead, start from your gate.

If Gate 9 is your gate, Madison and west Huntsville are natural places to start. See our Madison and Huntsville area pages. If you'd trade a longer drive for more land or a new build, north Madison County, including Meridianville and Hazel Green, has new communities like Mullins Bend and Sydney School Estates. Our gate comparison post goes further.

One more thing if your work will shift from the north campus to the south campus by 2030: a home that's an easy drive today may be a different drive later. Look at both routes before you buy.
