How School Enrollment Works After a Move to Huntsville or Madison
When you're moving in for a job on Redstone Arsenal, school questions usually come up before the house hunt even starts. This post doesn't rank schools, and we won't tell you which district is "best." That's your call, and the districts publish their own information. What we can do is explain how enrollment works here and who to call, so nothing surprises you after you close.
Your address decides your district
The Huntsville area has several public school districts side by side. The four you're most likely to run into:
- Huntsville City Schools. P.O. Box 1256, Huntsville, AL 35807. Phone (256) 428-6800.
- Madison City Schools. 211 Celtic Drive, Madison, AL 35758. Phone 256-464-8370. The district lists 14 schools and about 13,600 students.
- Madison County Schools. 1275 Jordan Road, Huntsville, AL 35811. Phone 256-852-2557. The district says it serves more than 20,500 students across 30 campuses.
- Limestone County Schools. 300 South Jefferson Street, Athens, AL 35611. Phone 256-232-5353.
Here's the part that trips people up. The city on a mailing address doesn't decide the school district. A "Huntsville" address can sit outside Huntsville city limits and be served by Madison County Schools. A "Madison" address isn't automatically in Madison City Schools, and the city of Madison reaches into Limestone County.
So before you write an offer, check the specific property with the district. Madison City Schools publishes school zone information on its website, and every district can confirm zoning for an address. When we're helping you with a home, we'll point you to the right office, but the district's answer is the one that counts.
What to have ready when you enroll
Each district sets its own registration steps and document list, and those lists can change from year to year. Call or check the district's enrollment page before you move and ask for the current list.
Proof of residence is the item that most often causes trouble when you've just closed or just signed a lease. If your closing date falls after the school year starts, ask the district how it handles that gap and what it accepts from a family in temporary housing.
It also helps to request records from your current school before you leave, so you aren't waiting on a records office from another state.
Help for military-connected students
If you're on military orders, you have extra support.
The Interstate Compact. Alabama is a member of the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children, written into state law at Ala. Code § 16-44B-1. The compact addresses issues military kids run into when they change schools, such as records and placement.
Purple Star. Madison City Schools has a Military-Connected Families page and takes part in the Alabama Purple Star Schools program, which recognizes schools that support military-connected students. Madison County Schools describes itself as a Purple Star District. Ask any district you're considering what support it offers.
The School Liaison Office. Redstone Arsenal's School Liaison Office is part of Child, Youth and School Services at the Pershing Community Welcome Center, Building 3443, on Honest John Road between Vincent Road and Patton Road. The School Liaison Officer's line is (256) 842-9642, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. That's the place to ask about local districts, transitions and the compact.
A practical order of operations
Here's how we'd sequence it.
- Get your orders or offer letter and a rough report date.
- If you're military, call the School Liaison Office. Then call the district or districts you're considering and ask about enrollment steps, deadlines and what proof of residence they accept.
- Narrow your home search to addresses served by the district you've chosen, and confirm zoning for any home before you make an offer.
- Request records from your current school before you leave.
- Enroll once you have the proof of residence the district asks for.
Where we fit in
We can't enroll your kids or promise a specific school. We can make sure the homes you see are in the district you asked for, and we'll send you to the district office to confirm before you commit.
