Match the house to your start date
With a new build, timing is the big question. A home that's finished or close to it may fit a start date a few weeks out. A home that hasn't been started takes much longer. Before you sign, ask the builder for the expected completion date in writing and what the contract says if it slips. If the dates don't line up, renting for a while can be the simpler path.

Which gate will you use?
Your gate matters as much as your miles. Gate 9 on Rideout Road is open 24/7. On weekdays, Gates 1, 3 and 7 go outbound only from 1:30 to 9 p.m., and Gate 10 on Patton Road is open 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. (Redstone Arsenal access control page, Oct 14, 2026). Test-drive your route at rush hour before you choose a lot.
What to ask a builder
What's included in the base price, and what counts as an upgrade?
What's the expected completion date, and what does the contract say about delays?
Are there lender incentives, and do they require the builder's lender?
What does the warranty cover, and for how long?
