Big Spring Park East: What's Coming to Downtown Huntsville in 2027
Big Spring Park is the center of downtown Huntsville, and it's getting bigger. WAFF 48 News got an exclusive tour of the Big Spring Park East expansion last week, and the work is further along than a lot of people realize. Here's what's being built, when it should be done, and what it means whether you already live here or you're planning a move.
What's being built
The City of Huntsville is turning the site of the old City Hall, at 308 Fountain Circle, into 2.4 more acres of park on the east side of Church Street. The project is a $12.5 million investment. When the City awarded the construction contract in January, it said the winning bid came in about $2 million under the approved budget.
Based on WAFF's tour and the City's own project updates, the finished park will include:
- A pavilion with a green roof and a timber frame
- A playground with a natural, rustic theme
- A waterfall and a sitting wall
- Three levels of plazas
- A public restroom building
- An art walk on a winding path inspired by Lombard Street in San Francisco, with artwork planned at each turn
- New crosswalks connecting the park to the rest of downtown, including a raised crosswalk across Church Street that ties the east and west sides of the park together
The public art is being done in partnership with ArtsHuntsville, and the design comes from Bostick Landscape Architects and Nola VanPeursem.
If you drove Church Street this summer, you already saw part of the project. The City rebuilt the sidewalks and started a tree-lined median between Clinton and Williams avenues, with landscaping on the median planned for this fall.
When it should open
Chris O'Neil, the City's facilities projects manager, told WAFF the project is on schedule for late spring 2027. He pointed to Panoply Arts Festival as one of the big events the new space is meant for. In his words: "We've created areas that hopefully will be a gathering place for people to sit and hang out, listen to music, and just interact."
Easier to get around
One part of this project that doesn't get much attention is access. The expansion adds two new accessible routes between Church Street and Fountain Circle: the switchback path along the south side of the park and a second winding sidewalk up to the plaza levels. The City has said that today, someone using a wheelchair may have to go all the way around the block to make that connection. That's a real improvement for a park this many people use.
Why it matters if you live here or you're moving here
When people ask us what there is to do in Huntsville, Big Spring Park is usually one of the first places we mention. It's free, it's right downtown, and it's where a lot of the city's big gatherings happen. Adding 2.4 acres of plazas, play space and art gives everyone more room to spread out on a festival weekend or just walk the park on a Saturday morning.
It's also a good sign of where the city is putting its money. Projects like this one tend to make downtown a better place to spend time, and that's worth knowing when you're deciding where to buy.
We sell homes across Huntsville, Madison and the surrounding towns, and downtown is part of life no matter which area you pick. Some of our buyers want to be close in. Others want more land or a brand-new house in places like Meridianville, Harvest or Madison and come into town for events. You can browse new construction around Huntsville, see communities like Mullins Bend and Sydney School Estates, or search all homes for sale.

We'll be there when it opens
We'll keep an eye on the project and share updates as the pavilion and art walk come together. If you'd like to talk about homes in the Huntsville area, reach out to The Nicolaou Group at Capstone Realty at 256-993-5800 or through our contact page.
