Redstone Arsenal Gate Hours: A Plain Guide for New Arrivals

If you just took a job on Redstone Arsenal, one of the first things you'll learn is that not every gate is open when you need it. Some run around the clock. Others close to inbound traffic in the early afternoon. Picking a house without knowing which gate you'll use is how people end up with a long detour every evening.

Here's what the Army's own pages list right now, and how we suggest you use it.

The gates and their posted hours

This table comes from the Redstone Arsenal Gate Information and Access Control page on home.army.mil, checked October 14, 2026. The weekday gates are closed on federal holidays.

Gate Road Posted hours
Gate 9 (main gate) Rideout Road Open 24/7
Gate 1 Martin Road (East) Opens 5:30 a.m., then outbound only 1:30 to 9 p.m., Monday to Friday
Gate 7 Martin Road (West) 5:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., then outbound only 1:30 to 9 p.m., Monday to Friday
Gate 10 Patton Road 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday to Friday
Gate 3 Redstone Road 5:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., then outbound only 1:30 to 9 p.m., Monday to Friday
Gate 8 Goss Road (Drake Ave and Patton Rd) 1:45 to 9 p.m. Monday to Friday; 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday

One honest caveat. Gate hours change, and Redstone's own pages don't always match each other while updates roll out. Gates change with construction and staffing. Before your first day, check the official visitor information page and ask your sponsor or security office which gate they use.

The Visitor Control Center

If you don't have a DoD ID yet, you'll start at the Visitor Control Center on Rideout Road, outside Gate 9. The posted hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, closed on federal holidays. Non-DoD visitors register there, and the process includes a background check before an access badge is issued.

That matters for house-hunting trips too. If a family member wants to see the Arsenal with you, plan the visit during those weekday hours.

Moving trucks and deliveries

Your moving truck goes through a different process. The visitor page says commercial vehicles needing one-time access use the truck lane at Gate 1, where they're inspected. When the truck lane closes, commercial vehicles use the main Gate 1 lane, and when Gate 1 is closed, they use Gate 9. This only matters if you're moving into on-post housing, but it's worth passing along to your moving company.

How gate hours should shape your house search

Here's how we think about it when we're helping someone pick an area.

Know your building, not just "Redstone." The Arsenal is big. Your office might be closer to one gate than another, and your sponsor will know which gate most people in your organization use.

Plan around the gate that's open when you leave. Gates 1 and 7 on Martin Road switch to outbound only at 1:30 p.m. on weekdays, which works fine for the drive home. Gate 10 on Patton Road closes at 9 p.m. on weekdays. If you work evenings or weekends, Gate 9 or Gate 8 may be your only options.

Drive it at your real hours. A map at noon tells you very little. If you can, drive from a neighborhood you like to the gate you'll use, at the time you'd actually leave in the morning.

Watch for road projects. In September 2025, the City of Huntsville listed I-565 widening to I-65 and Martin Road widening (from Gate 7 to Huntsville International Airport) as under construction, with Resolute Way, a planned connection from I-565 to Gate 9, in design. Projects like these change commutes over time, so ask about current status when you're house-hunting.
