Living Near Gate 9 or Gate 1: Planning Your Redstone Commute

When people ask us where they should live for Redstone, our first question back is, "Which gate?" It sounds like a small thing. Over a few years of commuting, it isn't.

This post compares the gates people ask about most: Gate 9 on Rideout Road, Gate 1 on Martin Road East and Gate 7 on Martin Road West. It's about roads and hours. Every area around the Arsenal has good options, and the right one depends on your office, your schedule and the kind of home you want.

Gate 9: the main gate on Rideout Road

Gate 9 is Redstone's main gate. According to the Arsenal's visitor information page, it's open 24 hours a day, every day. The Visitor Control Center is on Rideout Road outside Gate 9, so it's also where new employees without a DoD ID start.

Because it never closes, Gate 9 is the default for anyone with early, late or weekend hours. If you're looking at homes in Madison or west Huntsville, ask your sponsor whether Gate 9 is the gate you'll use. Our Madison and Huntsville area pages are a good place to start.

The City of Huntsville has a related project to watch. In its September 2025 update, the city listed Resolute Way, a planned connection from I-565 to Gate 9 and Redstone Gateway Park, as in design. That's a plan, not a finished road, so ask about its status when you're here.

Gate 1 and Gate 7: the Martin Road gates

Gates 1 and 7 sit on Martin Road. Their weekday hours are shorter. The Arsenal's access control page lists Gate 7 as open 5:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., then outbound only until 9 p.m., Monday through Friday. Gate 1 opens at 5:30 a.m. and is outbound only from 1:30 to 9 p.m. Both are closed on federal holidays. Gate hours change, so check the official page before you rely on them.

For a standard weekday schedule, that works. You come in through Martin Road in the morning and leave the same way in the afternoon. The catch is coming back onto post after lunch or on a weekend. Then you'll be routing to Gate 9 or another open gate.

Martin Road itself is changing. The city listed widening of Martin Road, from Gate 7 to Huntsville International Airport, as under construction in September 2025.

Don't forget Gate 10 and Gate 8

If you're looking at homes north of the Arsenal, Gate 10 on Patton Road and Gate 8 on Goss Road may matter more than either of the gates above. The access control page lists Gate 10 as open 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays, and Gate 8 as open 1:45 to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends. The Pershing Community Welcome Center, home to many newcomer services, is in the northeast section of the Arsenal near Gate 8. Our gate hours guide has every gate in one table.

How to test a commute before you buy

We don't publish drive times, because they depend on your exact starting point, the hour and whatever's under construction that month. Here's what works better than any number we could print.

• Ask your sponsor which gate people in your building use. That one answer narrows your search more than anything else.
• Drive the route at your real start time. If you can, do it on a weekday morning during your house-hunting trip.
• Drive it home too, after 1:30 p.m. That's when the Martin Road gates switch to outbound only.
• Check the gate hours again close to move-in. They change.
• Think about your whole week. Daycare, the gym, the airport and errands all add up.

Matching homes to your gate
